During the Republic National Convention in Milwaukee, former President Donald Trump strongly criticized Joe Biden's advocacy for the electrification of road transport.
“I will end the electric vehicle mandate on day one, thereby saving the auto industry from complete obliteration which is happening right now and saving US customers thousands and thousands of dollars per car,” Trump told the crowd gathered at Fiserv Forum.
The mandate mentioned by Trump pertains to the Joe Biden administration's objective of ensuring that most newly marketed passenger automobiles and light trucks in the United States are fully electric or hybrid by 2032.
Trump demanded the resignation of Shawn Fain, the head of the United Auto Workers union, accusing him of permitting foreign electric vehicle manufacturers to sell their products in the country without tariffs. Trump claimed that this was made possible by these manufacturers establishing factories in Mexico.
Trump appears to be alluding to the forthcoming facility in Mexico by Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. Certain automakers have regarded this factory as a means to get more affordable electric vehicles into the U.S. market while avoiding the tariffs imposed on electric cars built in China. Nevertheless, BYD has always stated that it has no intention of entering the U.S. market.
“United Auto Workers should be ashamed for allowing this to happen and the leader of the UAW should be fired immediately. Every single auto worker, union and nonunion, should be voting for Donald Trump because we are going to bring back car manufacturing and we are going to bring it back fast,” Trump stated.
The UAW officially backed Joe Biden for the upcoming November election in January. Trump emphasized that foreign manufacturers must establish manufacturing facilities within the United States and ensure that American laborers assemble their automobiles to be eligible for sale within the country.
“If they don’t agree with us we’ll put a tariff of approximately 100% to 200% on each car and they will be unsellable in the United States. We have long been taken advantage of by other countries,” Trump stated. Additionally, he said that mandating foreign players to construct in America will substantially increase employment opportunities within the country.
The Biden administration has implemented a tax exceeding 100% on electric automobiles manufactured in China. “By the way, I’m all for electric; they have their applications, but if somebody wants to buy a gas-powered car, gasoline-powered car, or a hybrid, they’re going to be able to do it, and we’re going to make that change on day one,” Trump said. Trump criticized the Joe Biden administration for heavily investing in the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
“AI needs tremendous- literally twice the electricity that’s available now in our country- but instead we’re spending in places where they recharge electric cars,” Trump cited an article from The Washington Post indicating that the government's $7.5 billion funding for EV charging stations had only resulted in the establishment of seven operable stations as of March.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Inc., a prominent electric vehicle company in the United States, has previously expressed a positive rapport with President Trump and criticized President Biden based on his advanced age. Since Saturday, Musk has openly voiced his support for Trump's candidacy for presidential reelection following a shooting incident at Trump's campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
